Well. It's been a while. In all honesty, I don't have an excuse for my
blogging break. Other than lacking motivation in life in general. A lot has
happened in the last four months which I most definitely will be blogging about
in time. But first on to a more important subject! Pride Month!
The LGBT+ community mean a hell of a lot to me. The
majority of my closest friends are openly gay and it makes me burst with pride (no pun intended) that they - and the entire community have a whole month to celebrate who they
are! To all of my LGBT+ friends, I want to let you know that I am proud of you,
you should be proud of you too. Always remember that you deserve nothing
more than unconditional love and acceptance, as you were born to be, and don't
let anybody tell you otherwise.
Over the last five years or so I have seen the closest of my friends’ blossom into something rather spectacular. Growing into the most confident, brave human beings who I admire more than anything. They have not only had to face the fear of acceptance from their families, friends, and members of the public. But some of them have also had to face the struggle of accepting themselves and that takes up more courage than anything.
To my gay friends, who have shaped me as the person who I have grown to be today. Before I met you all I was far too shy and reserved. You have all bought that little bit of magic to my life which had been missing. There is something a little bit special about surrounding yourself with positive, flamboyant people who frankly, don't give a shit what anybody thinks of them. I feel like I owe the last few years, which have truly been my happiest, to you. You have taught me that being yourself is everything regardless of what others think. You're by far the nicest, non-judgmental bunch of people I have ever met. My only regret is that I didn't meet you sooner. So happy, proud, and privileged to call you my best friends.
So, Pride Month is here and whether you're LGBT+ or not it is still a perfect celebration of acceptance and equality. This is a time to celebrate love. I try to attend my local gay pride street parade/party every year. Being in the midst of it all, being surrounded by like-minded people is the most wonderful feeling. The feeling that everyone is united. I've realised in recent years that the pride celebrations work as a safe haven for the LGBT community, they're not a place to go to feel gay but to feel a sense of normality for a short space of time. Should it be this way? I don't think so.
Here is to my gays, lesbians, transgender, bisexuals, drag queens, asexuals, queers and the +'s of ya.
This is your time, be bold, be loud, be proud, be unapologetic.
Dance through our streets filling them with rainbows and glitter. Keep loving each other. Keep respecting each other.
But never ever change who you are.
